job well done
Sir John MillsFebruary 22, 1908 - April 23, 2005
After a brief illness, Sir John Mills died at the age of 97 in Denham, Buckinghamshire, England. He was survived by his wife, his son Jonathan, his daughters Juliet and Hayley, and his grandson Crispian Mills, the lead singer of the hit pop music group Kula Shaker. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1970 for Ryan's Daughter, directed by David Lean. His performance in that film has always haunted me, and after seeing it for the first time (at least a decade ago) I became hooked on Sir John and made it a point to see any film of his that I could get my hands on. Some of my favorite John Mills performances come from these films:
This Happy Breed (44) *****
Great Expectations (46) *****The Rocking Horse Winner (50) ****
The End of the Affair (55) **** 1/2
War and Peace (56) ****
Tiger Bay (59) **** 1/2
Swiss Family Robinson (60) ****
Tunes of Glory (60) *****King Rat (65) **** 1/2
The Wrong Box (66) **** 1/2
Oh! What a Lovely War (69) **** 1/2
Ryan's Daughter (70) ****
Young Winston (72) **** 1/2
Zulu Dawn (79) ****
Gandhi (82) *****Hamlet (96) **** 1/2
Bright Young Things (03)

He will soon be discovered by a whole new generation of film lovers.
